Letters I Never Sent

To My Baby

A pregnant woman resting, cradling her belly with both hands.

“You were never Plan B. You were always the dream.”

To My Baby,

You don't know this yet, but I built my life around you long before I ever held you.

I picked you out of dreams and needles. Of doctor's offices and solo waiting rooms. Of whispered prayers and quiet strength on the nights no one else saw me cry.

I chose this. I chose you. I chose to become your mom in a world that told me I needed someone else to make it complete. But I believed in something bigger — I believed in us.

And still… some nights, after bedtime bottles and tiny socks in the laundry, I wonder: Am I enough? Is one set of hands enough to hold your world? Is one tired heart enough to pour into yours day after day, year after year?

Because I don't have a partner to trade off with. No one to step in when I'm empty. It's just me. And you. And this life I fought for — this love I built from the ground up.

But then… you smile. You reach for me in the dark. You say "Mama" like it's all you need. And suddenly, the doubt softens.

Because maybe enough isn't about how many people are in the house. Maybe enough is showing up tired, and still showing up. Maybe enough is love without conditions, without backup, without needing proof it was the "right" way.

So when you're old enough to understand, I hope you know — you were never Plan B. You were always the dream. You were always worth it.

— Love, Your Mom
